thewizI had the pleasure of attending Village Production’s offering of the 1970′s classic “The Wiz” on this sunny Father’s Day afternoon. Having attending “Miracle On 34th Street” in December at the Tri-County Performing Arts Center, I had high expectations for this production as well. I was not disappointed!

If you are not familiar with “The Wiz” here is a brief background. “The Wiz” first appeared as a Broadway play in 1975 and was made into a musical film in 1978 starring Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. The story is an urbanized retelling of L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz”.

The production has two acts that run approximately 3 hours total and a 15 minute intermission. The intimacy of the main stage lends itself well to audience involvement and participation (which is encouraged). Characters come and go from all sides and utilize every square inch of the set. The imaginative use of space and scenery highlight the superb acting, singing and choreography. The audience is drawn into the production which is what I also experienced with “Miracle On 34th Street”.

The large cast features local talent ranging from second grade through mature adults. Most local school districts are represented and the cast also includes many Tri-County area adult residents. Everyone involved should be congratulated for their hard work including “The Wiz” production staff, orchestra and the Village Productions staff. The performance is highly professional and seamlessly flows from scene to scene. The stadium-like seating is roomy, provides excellent visibility and was still comfortable after three hours.  (Story continued below pictures)

Stand out performances include 16 year old Pottstown High School sophomore Alexa Morefield as Dorothy. Alexa is poised and talented beyond her years. Marc Sherfield gives a memorable and heartwarming performance as the Tin Man. Isaih Robinson perfectly captures the expressive role of the Cowardly Lion. Russell Johnson delights as the Scarecrow. Gary Giles, as the Wiz, delivers a powerful vocal performance and captures the essence of the great and powerful Oz. The very funny Michael Kiesling rounds out the list as the Gatekeeper of Emerald City.

If you have not attended a performance, you can still do so on June 25th, 26th, 27th & 28th. Call the Box Office at 610-970-1199 for dates, times and prices. You may also purchase tickets online at www.tripac.org The center is located at 245 E. High Street in downtown Pottstown.

We are fortunate to have a performing arts center in Pottstown. Your continued support will ensure that it stays in Pottstown and provides area residents with quality productions for years to come.

I give “The Wiz” two thumbs up!
