One hundred and four young people from across the state graduated from a week-long program that gave them opportunities to explore careers in the military and law enforcement, State Police Commissioner Frank E. Pawlowski announced.
The annual American Legion/State Police Youth Week was conducted June 13-19 at York College of Pennsylvania by personnel from State Police, the American Legion and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
“The cadets, ages 15 to 17, participated in physical training and learned lessons about discipline and leadership,” Pawlowski said. “They attended sessions teaching them about self-defense, firearms safety, the Pennsylvania Crimes Code, forensic sciences and other topics related to military or police work.”
Grant T. Cox of Guys Mills, Crawford County, received the Scott Ball Outstanding Cadet Memorial Award. Josiah D. LaDuke of Ellwood City, Lawrence County, received the Elmer Hafer Award for his essay on the week at camp, while Alia C. Clark of North East, Erie County, received the William Evans Leadership Award.
Speakers at the graduation ceremony included Pawlowski and Col. Walter Lord, deputy commander of the 28th Infantry, Pennsylvania Air National Guard.
Next year’s American Legion/State Police Youth Week camp will be held June 12-18, 2011, at York College. Information is available on-line at www.pa-legion.com or by calling the American Legion at 717-730-9100.
